History of the Neighborhood Chipping Program

The name “Chipper Day” is reminiscent of a beaver chipping through the forest, turning little trees and branches into chips.

The very first Big Bear area chipping program was held by The Big Bear Valley Fire Safe Council in 2004. Property owners were asked to haul overgrown vegetation, tree trimmings, and branches to a central location. This was marginally successful as most homeowners had no way of transporting large piles of materials.

Thus, the Bear Valley Curbside Neighborhood Chipping Program was born.  The property owner would call the Curbside Chipping Program hotline to schedule a pickup at the side of the road.
